Calling Barbers and Hairdressers - Human hair can be added to compost!
Remembering that we need a balanced mix of browns and greens, here's what you can put in your bin.
BROWNS
Leaves are a large part of garden waste. If you can break them down, they will reduce in size thus making them easier to stre until you can use them in the pile, and they will decompose a lot faster.
Pine Needles and conifer clippings need to be chopped or shredded as much as possible, as they are covered with a thick, waxy coating and therefore decompose much more slowly.
Grass Cuttings are an great addition to a heap as they break down quickly and contain high amounts of nitrogen. They are an ideal activator..
Kitchen Refuse includes melon rinds, carrot peelings, tea bags, apple cores, banana peels - almost everything that cycles through your kitchen. The average household produces more than 200 pounds of kitchen waste every year. You can successfully compost all forms of kitchen waste. However, meat, meat products, dairy products, and high-fat foods like salad dressings and peanut butter, can present problems. Meat scraps and the rest will decompose eventually, but will smell bad and attract pests. Egg shells are a wonderful addition, but decompose slowly, so should be crushed. All additions to the compost pile will decompose more quickly if they are chopped up some before adding.
